- National Postal Museum – The museum is free and right across Union Station metro as well as two blocks from Capitol Hill. Family Time: Winter holidays mean school breaks and lots of time for family activities. Unlike other area museums, the Postal Museum is a relaxing, less chaotic option for a family visit. Whether it is looking at the numerous planes hanging from the ceiling in the atrium, hopping into the semi truck or walking the trails of postal workers in the Old West, there are so many exhibits to explore you may have to come back for another visit!. Aside from all of the hands-on activities at the museum, the goal remains education. The first Monday of each month the museum hosts a storytime for children (recommended ages 2-3), which includes a story, followed by quiet, private time in the museum. Visitors young and old will emerge from the museum with a new fascination for stamps and a deeper appreciation of the postal service. As Emery proudly says, « Kids have a ball here, they love learning…and they love walking out the door knowing that they’ve learned something. » From: Family Day at National Postal Museum Website: postalmuseum.si.edu Metro Accessible: Red Line/ Union Station Cost: Free Hours: Open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed Christmas Day Kids Will Love: Owney the first unofficial mascot of the U.S. Postal Service
